NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) welcomed Professor Mazhar Asif as its 16th Vice-Chancellor on October 25, 2024. Appointed by the Honourable President of India, Professor Asif joins JMI from the School of Language, Literature & Culture Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His tenure will last for five years or until he reaches the age of 70, marking a significant new chapter in the university’s leadership.
Tributes to Historic Figures on Campus
In his first action as Vice Chancellor, Professor Asif paid homage to notable figures on the JMI campus. He visited the mausoleums of Brigadier Usman, the famed “Lion of Naushera” known for his bravery in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-48, and former President of India Dr Zakir Husain. Professor Asif is the first Vice Chancellor of JMI to make this tribute immediately upon joining, which was warmly received by faculty and staff alike.
Commitment to Student-Centric Leadership
Meeting with university deans and senior officials, Professor Asif outlined his commitment to a student-focused approach. He pledged to prioritise student welfare by enhancing campus facilities and promoting a safe, inclusive environment. “Our goal is to ensure good accommodation, food, safety, and security for students,” he stated, highlighting that collaborative efforts would be key in elevating JMI’s standing.
An Invitation to Dialogue and Constructive Criticism
Professor Asif encouraged open communication, inviting staff to bring suggestions along with any issues they wished to address. “I always welcome criticism,” he noted, expressing that he values practical solutions alongside feedback.
With a focus on community and academic excellence, Professor Asif concluded by expressing gratitude to the JMI fraternity, the Government of India, and all associated with the university. His appointment signifies a promising direction for JMI’s growth and development.
