The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued show-cause notices to medical colleges for failing to submit details of stipends provided to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. The colleges have been instructed to provide the stipend data for the 2023-24 financial year within three days of receiving the notice.
The report reveals that 115 government medical colleges and 83 private colleges have not submitted information regarding stipend payments to undergraduate interns, senior residents, and postgraduate students in super-speciality courses.
The NMC, in an official notice, stated that the failure of these medical colleges to provide information on stipend payments to interns and residents is being taken seriously. The colleges listed in the attached document have been directed to explain why penal action should not be initiated against them for their non-compliance in submitting the required stipend details.
The Supreme Court has instructed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to provide information regarding the stipends paid to medical interns and residents. In response to this directive, all medical colleges and healthcare institutions have been mandated to submit details of stipends for UG interns, PG residents, and senior residents or PGs in the super speciality for the financial year 2023-24.
“The Supreme Court of India in WP(C) No.730/2022 & other cases, vide their orders dt. 16-09-2023 and 01-04-2024, has directed NMC to submit the details of stipends paid to the Medical Interns and residents. Accordingly, all the Health Institutions/Medical Colleges were directed, vide Public Notice dated 16-04- 2024, to submit to NMC, the details of stipend paid to their UG interns, PG residents and Senior residents or PGs in Super Specialty for the financial year 2023-24 as per Annexure-1 on E-mail ID: stipend23-24@nmc.org.in,” reads the official notice.

For the financial year 2024-25 and onwards, the NMC has instructed medical colleges and institutions to publish stipend details on their respective websites and update them monthly, by the 5th of each month. At the end of the financial year, a comprehensive statement of stipend details must be submitted to the NMC.
