A new Netflix biopic on the life of Mary, mother of Jesus, has ignited controversy following its release on December 6. Directed by DJ Caruso, the film explores Mary’s journey from childhood to motherhood, highlighting the trials and challenges she faced.
The titular role is played by 22-year-old Israeli actress and model Noa Cohen, whose casting has drawn mixed reactions, particularly amidst ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Critics on social media have questioned the decision, with one user on X writing, “There is something profoundly offensive about having an Israeli actor play Mary, the mother of Jesus, while Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians, killing some of the oldest Christian communities in the world and erasing their heritage sites (sic).”

Others defended the choice, noting that Jesus was Jewish and that Palestine did not exist during Mary’s time.

Caruso, known for directing films like Disturbia and xXx: Return of Xander Cage, defended Cohen’s casting, emphasising the importance of authenticity.
“It was important to us that Mary, along with most of our primary cast, be selected from Israel,” Caruso had told The Telegraph. He also described his vision for the film as a portrayal of “the real, human Mary.”
Cohen addressed the backlash, stating, “Mary was a young woman likely filled with her own fears and uncertainties, suddenly asked to carry an immense responsibility. We aimed to convey the emotional weight and inner strength she must have had.”
The film also features Ido Tako as Joseph and Anthony Hopkins as King Herod, presenting a dramatic retelling of one of Christianity’s most revered figures.
