India’s first solar power storage plant will be set up soon in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena. The work for constructing the storage plant, which can supply electricity during the night as well, will begin from next year and the plant will be functional by 2027.

The cost of this 600 MW capacity plant, which will be built in an area of around 3,000 hectares in Morean, is expected to be around Rs 3,500 crore.

Solar power plants usually provide electricity only during the day, but this plant will store the electricity produced in the day and supply it during the night.

This plant is expected to reduce the cost of electricity borne by the government to provide power for the farmers during the Rabi crop season (November to April) in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh respectively.

Both state governments will be able to provide to the farmers at night at the rate of Rs 4 to 5 per unit, after the plant is set up.

Notably, Madhya Pradesh is among the leading states in production of solar energy in the country. One of the world’s largest solar power plant is located in Rewa in the state, which produces 750 MW of electricity, out of which 76 per cent is supplied to power generation companies of the state, while the remaining 24 per cent power is supplied to the Delhi Metro.
