The icy heights of the Siachen glacier, the world’s highest and coldest battlefield, and Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) have got optical-fibre connectivity, ensuring seamless communication in extreme conditions in the region, the Army said on Monday.
The Siachen glacier, located at an altitude of 18,000 to 20,000 feet in the Karakoram mountain range of Ladakh, is known as the highest militarised zone in the world. Soldiers stationed here face severe challenges, including frostbite and high winds.
Amid the icy heights of Siachen and DBO, the signallers of the Fire and Fury Corps braved extreme weather conditions and treacherous terrain at altitudes exceeding 18,000 feet, and established the optical-fibre connectivity.
The Fire and Fury Corps also posted a video showcasing the efforts of Army soldiers as they laid optical fibre cables in snow-clad mountains.
The visuals captured soldiers trekking through deep snow, manoeuvring over icy ridges, and navigating steep, slippery slopes to complete their mission.
Despite bone-chilling winds and visibility challenges, the jawans can be seen meticulously laying cables with precision and determination.
“For the very first time and against all odds, optical fibre cables were meticulously laid across the ruthless and unforgiving terrain to connect remote locations,” the Fire and Fury Corps of the Army said in a post on X.
Navigating treacherous crevasses and enduring bone-chilling winds, the signallers demonstrated exceptional dedication to ensure uninterrupted connectivity in these formidable conditions.
Daulat Beg Oldi is a strategically-important military base located in the Karakoram range of northern Ladakh.
The recent disengagement in Demchok and Depsang Plains, which began a month ago, has seen patrolling in these critical areas resumption. However, the Indian Army remains cautious and vigilant, maintaining its guard despite the withdrawal of troops.
“Perseverance and unyielding spirit have prevailed over every challenge, ensuring that our troops remain connected and operationally prepared,”a senior Army officer said to India Today TV highlighting the significance of these connectivity advancements.
