Security forces launched a search operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district on Saturday following an exchange of fire between suspected terrorists and Army troops during the early hours of the day.

Officials stated that suspicious movement was detected in the Bhatodi area of Kathua district around 1:20 am. “The alert sentry post of a temporary Army camp in Batod panchayat detected the movement of suspected terrorists at around 1:20 am and opened fire,” the Army was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

The exchange of fire, which lasted for about 30 minutes, resulted in no reported casualties. According to the Army, three suspected terrorists are believed to have fled into a nearby forest.

The Army has since launched a cordon-and-search operation in the area. The incident occurred a day before Republic Day celebrations scheduled for Sunday.

Officials noted that the operation is ongoing and further details are awaited.

Earlier this week, an Army jawan was killed during an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore district. The jawan was injured during a gunfight with terrorists at a hideout in Zaloora Gujjarpati, in the Sopore police district, officials said. He succumbed to his injuries while being evacuated from the scene.
