After RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s remark over the temple-mosque dispute, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav criticised the timing of the statement while referring to the death of 5 people in UP’s Sambhal. Yadav said that days after several people faced humiliation, the RSS is now suggesting that every temple should not be excavated.
Five people were killed during violent clashes in Sambhal on November 24. The unrest erupted when a mob protesting a court-ordered survey of a Shahi Jama Masjid confronted the police. The survey was initiated following a complaint alleging that a temple had been razed by the Mughals to build the mosque. In the violence, a case has been filed against Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rahman Warq for allegedly inciting a mob.
The RSS chief on Thursday called for India to be a model of inclusivity and harmony, urging leaders to avoid stoking tensions over temple-mosque disputes.
Slamming Mohan Bhagwat’s remarks, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav said, “When five people lost their lives in Sambhal and many others were humiliated, they are now saying every temple should not be excavated. The BJP should at least withdraw the false cases filed in Sambhal. Lives cannot be returned, but false cases can be taken back.”
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav, responding to Mohan Bhagwat’s remarks, said he should also talk about farmers and the Constitution. He criticised the BJP for focusing on temple-mosque issues and urged a shift towards discussions on progress and governance. “They should also talk about the country’s progress, brotherhood, democracy, farmers, and the Constitution,” Yadav said.
On Mohan Bhagwat’s remarks on temple-mosque disputes, Congress MP Manish Tewari said that the advice should be directed at those creating divisions. “There should be no difference between words and actions,” Tewari said. He added that restraint and adherence to the Constitution were essential.
