Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) (JCC) national president Renu Jogi has decided to merge her party with the Indian National Congress in the state.
Renu Jogi is the wife of the first chief minister of Chhattisgarh, Ajit Jogi, who had floated the party in June 2016 after parting ways with the Congress.
She wrote a letter to Chhattisgarh Congress president Deepak Baij on Wednesday, stating her intention to merge the parties. She said that her party believed in the Congress’s ideology.
Notably, Renu Jogi’s son Amit Jogi, who is the current state president of the JCC (J), had contested the 2023 Assembly elections in the state against Congress leader and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel.
Reacting to the decision to merge the parties, Baghel said that the Congress would think over it based on their merits and then take a decision.
The JCC (J) contested the 2018 assembly elections in an alliance with the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The alliance won seven seats, including five by the JCC (J).
However, the party drew a blank in the 2023 Assembly elections in the state.
